Hornets and wasps will sting when irritated and they can sting repeatedly. Bees have barbed stingers which will separate from the bee as it tries to fly away after stinging its victim. Wasps however have a smooth stinger which allows them to sting repeatedly. Wasp and hornet stings can be very painful. They can also become red and swollen and may itch.
