Fleas on Upholstery?

The most important thing to do when getting rid of fleas on furniture is to treat pets with an oral flea medication purchased from a veterinarian. Then keep the pets off of the furniture. Pets that have been rid of fleas will once again pick them up from infested furniture. Furniture that has been treated successfully can be invested again by pets. You’ll have an unbreakable cycle. Once the pets have been treated you may want to consider confining them to an un- infested room or keep them in a crate until the whole house issue is solved. There are a lot of effective ways to rid furniture of fleas, some work under certain conditions and others work under other conditions. Depending on the severity of the infestation you may have to try a few methods. Start by vacuuming the furniture thoroughly and daily. This will remove any live fleas, their larvae and their eggs. Change the bag immediately after vacuuming wrap the old vacuum bag tightly in plastic and dispose of it in an outside trash bin. A mild case of fleas will be gone in just a week. If the fleas haven’t been eradicated with simple vacuuming you may try sprinkling diatomaceous earth on the furniture and letting it be for several hours before vacuuming. Again proper disposal of the vacuum bag is key. Repeat the process for a week to ten days to be sure that the entire flea life cycle is completed and that there are no stray eggs left to hatch into fleas. Lastly a steam cleaner may be necessary for a severe infestation. Just like the vacuum treatments the steam cleaner should be used frequently over the course of time until all straggling fleas are removed. If none of these three methods work it may be time for new furniture.
