Ants and termites are both arthropods their bodies are similar but there are obvious differences between them. If you suspect termites, gather a sample insect for inspection. A family of ants will look far different than the termites. Most termites that bore into domestic structures are white or light in coloration with straight antennae, while ants are angled and sectioned. Ants have pinched structures, while termites have straight, sleeker structures that allow them better navigation through in their bored holes.

If you cannot find the actual insect but have come across damaged wood, you can determine whether the damage was done by ants or termites with a few clues. is there a mud tunnel nearby? Mud tunnels indicate the presence of termites. Mud tunnels look like trails of compacted dirt just under an inch high and an inch in wide.
